Firefighter William Lindler is a local hero worthy of a standing bark! Lindler was off the clock hanging out at home when he noticed smoke coming from his neighbor's shed. He then noticed his neighbors shouting for help, saying something about a puppy inside the burning shed.
Lindler instantly went into work mode, grabbing some fire fighting gear before rushing over to help. As a result, he was able to rescue the little puppy trapped inside. After pulling him free from the burning shed, the puppy was rushed to a local veterinary hospital.
At first it didn't look good considering the puppy, Jake, was burned over 75% of his body, including his fragile paw pads.
To make matters worse, his owners abandoned him at the vet because they couldn't afford the cost of his care. That's when Lindler once again stepped up to the plate, showing the world what a real hero looks like.
Lindler said, "I contacted the vet and the vet informed me that…the family had abandoned him at the office. That's when me and my family decided we would adopt him."
Jake is now doing incredibly well, especially considering the extent of his injuries and how young he was at the time. Jake owes it all to the love and care he received from Lindler, as well as his entire extended family at the local Hanahan Fire Department.
Before long, Jake was just one of the firefighters. In fact, he's now the official mascot of the fire department with his own badge and all!
Now that he's an official part of the pack, Jake enjoys going on regular trips to local schools to teach kids about fire safety and how to react in an emergency.
He's accomplished so much for such a young pup, but his beautiful life journey has only just begun. Lindler shares, "I would honestly like to get him certified to be a therapy dog for burned children. I would like for them to know that no matter how bad it is, this little guy beat the odds being burned as bad as he was at four weeks old and he's still beautiful."
